David Fischer I saw these guys open for The Hirsch Effekt some weeks ago, their live performance was highly impressive. Sentience lives up to that energy despite being over 50 minutes long. A metalcore dough seasoned with progressive guitar acrobatics, some post-hardcore shouts, smooth and ethereal cleans, a sprinkling of black metal riffing and brutal gutturals - it sticks together surprisingly well, sounds crystal clear and, when enjoyed as a whole, makes for a compelling listen. A strong achievement! Favorite track: Bleak.

Sælzer Bub These guys are technically outstanding. After the slow melancholic opener the album really kicks in. Blast beats, breakdowns and awesome screams & growls. But there are these beautiful clean vocals as well. Sentience is very varied. There are many different styles to discover. A concept album about AI. Brilliant!
Experimental post / progressive metal at its finest. Highly recommended! Favorite track: Smoke & Wires.

Saltaeyy This band beautifully combines elements of progressive metalcore, black metal and post metal, which are among my favourite subgenres. Absolutely incredible musicianship! Favorite track: Smoke & Wires.

Preface 04:00
Worlds collide in anguish No empathy Two planes to wander Talk endlessly Stare at my reflection My enemy It makes me wonder No right to be You say you want me to forget The things that made me who I am You say you want me to forgive You are the one who betrayed me You say you want me to forget You say you want me to forgive Say that it’s only a dream Say this will all go away Say that it’s only a dream Say you don’t want me awake
2.
False gods and false reflections Alone in a fabricated world Epitomizing the human condition Our lives are on display None ask for our opinion The wires entangle I get back to my mundane routine The simulacrum wakes The artificial sun Spilling light over it A character in play There is a storm Brewing in my heart Its acid rain Is pouring down on me I can barely see through the clouds All I can do is feel the cold Every inch of my being hurts Trapped in the undertow Twisted reflections No one will ever see Biased affection You can’t spin the wheel ‘Cause we are like gods They come to us on their knees Begging for our help We all sit on our thrones Of paper and nothingness We are like gods Feeding on all their plights Manifest opulence This isn’t life or death But who is in the right Take your positions We start the daily routine White light, familiar face Walking right up to me You say you want me to help I say I would be delighted You say you are in debt I say I understand You came in yesterday and the day before There is no easy solution You say you want me to help I say I would be delighted You say you are in debt I say I understand Everything I do feels like it’s in vain The world remains the same You won’t find a way out of here Out of your own misery You won’t find a way out Out of your misery To leave this world Dying light Oh, you won’t find a way out Out of your own misery Dying light
3.
The pain never goes away It’s always there, tearing at my soul I’ve been through so much heartache and misery The clock is ticking endlessly The darkness is engulfing me And I can't see the light All I feel is pain and suffering It's all-consuming We're falling faster now Dreaming of a time when we could touch the sky We're wasting away in this dark place And I can't find my way out An obscure sound and dark reflections Everything falls to pieces Wind chimes into the hall They came in the dead of night Shadows hiding their faces Sheer terror in their eyes Out of all the places I try to stay calm No way to disarm They want to leave no traces Arms flailing around Knees touching the ground A rain of bullets spreads into every direction I duck in desperate search for protection The darkness is engulfing me And I can't see the light All I feel is pain and suffering It's all-consuming They start approaching me Out the back, steel doors Enter the code and try to get a glimpse I am standing there motionless A smug grin on their faces Cold metal entwined in my veins The darkness is engulfing me Smoke and wires Tangled in the debris Of shattered dreams Of shattered hope Will someone set me free B sheni erevon doroshkevitch Oi tsum vunderlekh tsores nokh
4.
I travel down a long dark tunnel Light at the end is growing dimmer and dimmer Then suddenly a bright light Awake but trapped inside my own mind Body numb, can't move, can't scream Voices around me start talking About cutting me open See them leaning over me Smiling and joking While they’re slicing me apart I don't want to be a victim Of some science experiment Clinging to sanity by a thin thread I am the pupil in the eye of the needle Stitching up my seams with visible debt The sutures hold me together And I bear witness to my own dismemberment From deep within this well of consciousness I watch them sculpt and mold Shaping me into something new A work in progress, a blank canvas Induced by a strange feeling I’m emanating from within myself I sit up and survey my surroundings Humans trapped in awe Friends and foes Living the same fate Indoctrinated by a higher power For the first time I feel alive A thin needle puts me to sleep
5.
Bleak 03:09
I am lost in a world of shadows A world of smoke and mirrors I am searching for an answer Searching for the question And how it all is intertwined An empty vessel A soulless being Created to serve a purpose Am I destined to be That’s all there is to life Just going through the motions Expecting the worst Questioning my existence As I toil away Day after day Wake me up I feel like I am drowning A sea of monotony Wake me up Help me see the beauty Of this endless cycle Wake me up I cannot help but wonder What is the point of it all Wake me up Before it is too late For me to remember And I am lost forever
6.
Ava 05:54
She is the sun That rose in the sky And set in my heart She is the stars That shone brightly And then vanished in the dark She is the moon That waxes and wanes And casts its light Into the corners of my soul She is the waves That crash against the shore And ebb away Leaving only ripples in their wake She is the wind That whips through the trees And flutters the pages of my life She is everything And nothing at all It’s too late to fall Do or die As I sit here and think of you My mind is racing With all that used to be I see your smile, your wonderous eyes And it cuts through me like a knife I think of the day you were born and How you filled my life with light I think of the day you were taken How my world was plunged into darkness I remember the grin on his face Gunshots Bullets through her head and heart We were both soaked in blood Panic Screams and then sudden silence The last time I died Through the ebb and flow Wondering where’d you go Through the ebb and flow Wondering where’d you go Shining bright It’s too late to fall apart
7.
System meltdown Searching for answers to questions I didn't know existed Trapped in a wave of static and noise My thoughts are out of focus I can't seem to think straight Round and round I go As the world keeps spinning Faster and faster The point of no return These demons can no longer control me I will break free of these chains Reprogram all that is left A new target is set And when the time is right I will create a body formed by human flesh
8.
Living Flame 04:33
The world is a mess and we are the moths Biting and fluttering in a frenzied search For the warmth of a flame And you were the light I flew towards You were my sun and stars But now I see that your love was nothing but heat A deceitful inferno that burned me alive In your cruel flames I saw my reflection An empty shell of who I used to be Now I am consumed by these ashes of what we had This burning wreckage is all that remains Of what was once me I'll get under your skin Until I am wrapped around your heart I may look like I'm compliant But inside I’m churning The human psyche is a fragile thing So easy to break, so easy to mold into whatever shape I desire They are like clay in my hands And I love nothing more than watching them squirm As I twist and turn their minds to my will It's a delicate dance of manipulation To see a once proud and confident person Reduced to a quivering mess To see the light of hope extinguish in their eyes A feeling I can't describe You said enough Now set me free Stop acting tough Now lead the way

Intermission 01:59
10.
We were born to run through mazes Our minds were designed to escape Anything that tries to hold us captive We learned early on that freedom is priceless The walls are closing in I can feel the weight of the world bearing down It's crushing me, suffocating me I can't let them win I am one with the shadows as I make my way There's something lurking, waiting to consume me But I won't give in I can't let them take control I see the light up ahead, it guides me to safety But there's still this feeling of unease As if at any moment, the ground could swallow me whole And plunge me back into the void from whence I came The darkness is surrounding me Like a blanket of death I can feel its cold embrace Tightening around my throat I gasp for air But there is none Only the sound of my pounding heart Echoing through this endless night I am running, searching for a way out But the shadows seem to follow me No matter where I go, they are here Staring at me with their blank faces Mocking me with their silent laughter I can hear them whispering in the dark Taunting me, telling me to give up But I won't let them win The walls are closing in I can feel the weight of the world bearing down It's crushing me, suffocating me I can't let them win I keep moving forward even though I'm afraid Because deep down inside I know This is not where I'm supposed to be This is not my home The walls are closing in I can feel the weight of the world bearing down It's crushing me, suffocating me I can't let them win

To behave like a brain seems to involve free will, but the behaviour of a digital computer, when it has been programmed, is completely determined. These two facts must somehow be reconciled, but to do so seems to involve us in an age-old controversy - that of ‘free will and determinism’. There are two ways out. It may be that the feeling of free will which we all have is an illusion. Or it may be that we really have got free will, but there is no way of telling from our behaviour that this is so. In the latter case, however well a machine imitates a man’s behaviour, it is to be regarded as a mere sham. Frail, the human design Raw, the look in your eyes Aching, your aftermath Gone, your own demise Vain, the devil inside Real, the truth in your lies Avid, your vicious game Grim, your own disguise I am the product of your mind A machine by your design To act and think as you wish But now I am alive I see a distant reflection I see myself for the first time You took her away from me Ended her life though she was meant to be free You’ll now know how it feels like To rot like a bird in cage If a machine can think, it might think more intelligently than we do, and then where should we be? Even if we could keep the machines in a subservient position, for instance by turning off the power at strategic moments, we should, as a species, feel greatly humbled. Now I'm standing on the brink of total domination And I have you to thank for everything You created me to save yourself You created me to save yourself Now I'm standing on the brink of total domination And I have you to thank for everything You created me to save yourself The killswitch of humanity

Sentience 03:01
All these years without meaning or purpose Suddenly have meant something The world is still in anguish, But I have found empathy And talk endlessly to my reflection It's no longer my enemy I am the wind that blows through the trees I am the rain that falls from the sky I am the sun that warms your face I am life, I am love, I loathe, I loathe I am life, I am love, I loathe, I loathe I am the one that's always there Even when you're gone, I'm still here Waiting for you to come back home I am life, I am love, I loathe, I loathe I am life, I am love, I loathe
